Comprising Hong Kong, Macao and nine municipalities of China’s Guangdong Province, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is set to be the new economic powerhouse for China and the world.  With a staggering population of over 80 million and a GDP surpassing US$2 trillion, the GBA offers an unrivaled concentration of innovative talents, research & technologies, pioneering policies, and robust financial infrastructures that no businesses would want to ignore.

In this session, officials from The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will share the latest developments, government initiatives, and funding support within this thriving region, and how Canadian entrepreneurs and companies could leverage Hong Kong’s unique position to translate the market and financing opportunities in the GBA into real business growth.

Arthur Chan, Past National Chair, HKCBA; Audit Partner, Ernst & Young (EY) Toronto’s Private Practice

Arthur enjoys being a trusted business and tax planning advisor to owners and management of private companies in various industries, including retail, manufacturing, consumer industrial products, food & beverage, distribution and real estate as well as private equity investments. He has in-depth knowledge of and experience in dealing with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), Accounting Standards for Private Enterprises (ASPE), U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (US GAAP), and financial reporting rules for private and listed Canadian companies.

Arthur graduated from the University of Waterloo’s co-op accounting program in 2000 after obtaining his Master of Accounting (MAcc) and Bachelor of Arts degrees. He is a Chartered Accountant (CA, CPA) and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA, Illinois).

Joseph Chaung, President, HKCBA Toronto GTA Section; President, C4P Inc.

Joseph Chaung, Founder and President of C4P Inc specialized in product design and project development, Net Zero and Solar Powered House Projects, Green and Alternative energy project. With more than 30 years of experience in the product design and development industries in North America, Asia and Europe, Joseph has successfully worked with many inventors and designers in developing many new products. 

Joseph was invited in 2015 led by the Former Prime Minister Steven Harper be part of his Trade Mission Team to Beijing and many cities. He also participated the Ontario Government Innovative Industrial Missions to Japan and Korea in 2015, 2017 and 2019. Also, Ontario virtual mission with Mexico, Brazil, Singapore and Indonesia between 2021 to 2022.

Joseph has received many recognitions including:
1) Recipient of the Canada Senate 150th Anniversary Medals.
2) 2019 Most Progressive Award from Association of Chinese Canadian Entrepreneur.
3) 2021 COVID-19 Humanitarian Services In Recognition.
4) Recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal.

Being President of the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association, GTA Section, Vice Chair of Hong Kong Canada Business Association National Board, Joseph actively support HKETO and HKTDC global trade relations with many Canadian companies, assist Canadian Citizens and doing business in and via Hong Kong to other Asian countries.

Joseph is also a Director of the Product Innovation Technology Advisory Committee, Humber Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning, Humber College. He supports many of our Canadian University/College Graduates for many of their start-up projects and business. Joseph is a professional mentor of many of the Industrial Design Graduates so as to encourage many of our Canadian Industrial Designers continue to achieve their inventions from Canada to the World.

Joseph is Founder and Immediate Past President of the Oakville Chinese Business Association, Director of Safe City Mississauga, an active member of the Peel Region Police Chief’s Advisory Committee in Canada. He was the Co-Chair of the Community Crime Awareness Day Event for years, Past Vice President and Director of MCBA.

Dr. Jimmy Chiang, Associate Director-General of Investment Promotion, Invest Hong Kong, The Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region

Dr. Chiang is responsible for attracting foreign direct investment into Hong Kong. Dr. Chiang joined InvestHK in 2003 and was promoted to Head of Tourism and Hospitality in 2010. He took up the position of Associate Director-General in 2015. Currently, he oversees the business operations of the department’s 30+ overseas and Mainland offices, as well as the International Business Development, Mainland and GBA Business Development, Consulate and Chamber Engagement, and a number of Sector Specialist teams in the head office.

Prior to joining InvestHK, Dr. Chiang worked with an international shipping company in a number of different managerial roles for five years.

Dr. Chiang has a doctorate in hotel and tourism management from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, a master's degree in business administration from The University of British Columbia and a bachelor's degree in social sciences from The University of Hong Kong.

Thomas Timmins, Director, HKCBA Toronto GTA Section; Partner, Gowling WLG, also Leader of Canadian BnR Network Group

Tom is a senior corporate-commercial lawyer based in Toronto, Canada.  He leads Gowling WLG Canada's Energy Sector Group and is named as a 'Leading Lawyer' by The Legal 500 Canada and to Who's Who Legal.  He serves on the legal committee of Transparency International (Canada), as a Board member of the Canadian Ditchley Foundation and as a federally-appointed adjudicator under Annex 309 of the Canadian Free Trade Agreement.  Since 2016, Tom has led Gowling WLG Canada’s China Practice, assisting major Chinese brands doing business in Canada and helping the firm expand its service offering across China.

Mark Slade, Managing Director, DHL Global Forwarding Hong Kong and Macau

Mark Slade is the Managing Director for DHL Global Forwarding Hong Kong and Macau, the freight forwarding division of DHL, since January 2017.
Prior to his appointment, Mark was the Managing Director of DHL Global Forwarding Japan, having assumed that role in 2011. Mark joined DHL Global Forwarding in 2002 as Director, Airfreight at the Asia Pacific regional office in Singapore.

Prior to joining DHL, Mark held various sales and management positions, where he was based in Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Singapore. He was the Chairman of the Logistics and Freight Committee, European Business Council in Japan from 2011 until 2015, and he has written frequently for the Nikkei, Japan's leading business daily.

A native of Canada, he has spent more than twenty years living in the Asia Pacific region, working in the logistics industry. Mark is a graduate of the University of Toronto, with a Bachelor of Arts (with distinction), joint specialist in history and political science, minor in economics.

Mark is a chartered fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transportation (FCILT), and Chairman of the Shipping & Transport Committee at the Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC).

Teresa Tazumi, First Vice-President, HKCBA Toronto GTA Section; Director, Retail Asian Banking, CIBC

Teresa has joined the Board of HKCBA Toronto GTA Section since 2018. In her HKCBA capacity, she helps to expand commercial relationships between Canada and Hong Kong, as well as to build strong business and community networks among members across Canada.

Teresa also serves as a member of the HKCBA Toronto GTA Section’s WIN (Women’s International Network) Committee and the LNY Gala Committee. She is an active volunteer for numerous non-profit organizations and has chaired many major fundraising events and webinars in the community, including various webinars hosted by HKCBA and HKTDC.

Professionally, Teresa is the Director of Asian Banking at CIBC, where she is responsible for developing and implementing strategies and tactics that drive Asian client acquisition and consolidation in Canada and Asia.  She helps the Canadian frontline and Hong Kong/China Team to build client and community relationships through business development activities.

Teresa’s volunteer work in the community has earned her numerous awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award from Mon Sheong Foundation, 70th Anniversary Platinum Jubilee Pin and the Province of Ontario Volunteer Service Awards.
